North Macedonia, officially known as the Republic of North Macedonia, is a landlocked nation in Southeast Europe. It borders Greece to the south, Albania to the west, Bulgaria to the east, Kosovo to the northwest, and Serbia to the north. The country makes up the northern third of the greater geographical region of Macedonia. Skopje, its capital and largest city, houses around a quarter of the population, which exceeds 1.83 million. Most residents are ethnic Macedonians, a South Slavic group, while Albanians form a significant minority of about 25%, followed by Turks, Roma, Serbs, Bosniaks, Aromanians, and a few other ethnic groups.
The history of the region traces back to the Kingdom of Paeonia. In the late 6th century BC, it fell under the control of the Persian Achaemenid Empire before becoming part of the Kingdom of Macedonia in the 4th century BC. The Roman Republic conquered it in the 2nd century BC, incorporating it into the province of Macedonia. It remained within the Byzantine Empire but faced frequent raids and settlements by Slavic tribes from the 6th century CE onward. After centuries of rivalry among the Bulgarian, Byzantine, and Serbian Empires, it became part of the Ottoman Empire from the mid-14th century to the early 20th century. Following the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913, the territory of modern North Macedonia came under Serbian rule.
