Egypt, officially known as the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country located at the northeast corner of Africa and the southwest corner of Asia, connected by the Sinai Peninsula. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Palestine (Gaza Strip) and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south, and Libya to the west. The Gulf of Aqaba in the northeast separates Egypt from Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Cairo, the capital, is the largest city and a cultural hub, while Alexandria, the second-largest city, plays a key role in industry and tourism. With a population exceeding 107 million, Egypt ranks as the third-most populous country in Africa and the 15th-most populous in the world.

Egypt boasts one of the world’s longest histories, with its heritage tracing back to the 6th–4th millennia BCE along the Nile Delta. As a cradle of civilization, Ancient Egypt pioneered early advancements in writing, agriculture, urbanization, organized religion, and central governance. It became an important center of Christianity before adopting Islam in the seventh century. Alexandria, once Egypt’s capital and now its second-largest city, was renowned for its legendary Library. Cairo rose to prominence as the capital of the Fatimid Caliphate in the 10th century and the Mamluk Sultanate in the 13th century. Egypt later joined the Ottoman Empire in 1517, until Muhammad Ali established it as an autonomous Khedivate in 1867. British occupation followed, and Egypt, along with Sudan, gained independence in 1922 as a monarchy.
