Australia’s Highway 1 is a massive network of roads circling the entire country, connecting all mainland capital cities except Canberra. Stretching about 14,500 km (9,000 mi), it’s the longest national highway in the world, beating the Trans-Siberian Highway (over 11,000 km or 6,800 mi) and the Trans-Canada Highway (8,030 km or 4,990 mi). More than a million people travel on some part of it every day. It holds the record as the longest continuing highway, since the Pan-American Highway is interrupted by the Darién Gap and AH1 is broken by the Sea of Japan. Still, it’s not the longest single continuous stretch, as parts of the Pan-American and AH1 are longer.
