Rhodes.

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands of Greece and is their historical capital; it is the ninth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

The principal town of the island and seat of the municipality is the city of Rhodes. It is located northeast of Crete and southeast of Athens. Rhodes has several nicknames, such as “Island of the Sun” due to its patron sun god Helios, “The Pearl Island”, and “The Island of the Knights”, named after the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who ruled the island from 1310 to 1522.

Historically, Rhodes was famous for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

Rides

Requirements

These guides are assuming that you are renting a Motorbike in Rhodes. As such the only requirements you should need to have would be your passport and driving license.

Riding in Rhodes

Most of the motorbike rental companies give you a map, however Tenerife is that small it does not really matter if you get lost or not and mobile phone signal is good throughout the island.

Speed limits.

Unless otherwise stated by appropriate signs, the following national speed limits apply:

  • Towns: 50 km/h (31 mph)
  • Rural roads or Highways: 80 km/h (50 mph)

Realistically, any 125cc or above will do for anywhere on the island.

Staying legal.

Helmets are mandatory (all rental places I have come across include a helmet with rental) Greeks are actually quite famous for not wearing helmets; some even have them their arm and elbow while navigate the streets.

Earphones and speed radars are banned and can have a 200E fine.

If the police catch you they will fine you very simple!

Clothing.

Where to rent a bike.

To rent a bike in Rhodes;

  • A Valid Driving Licence
  • An International Driving License if you are not an EU driving license holder
  • You must be 21 years or older
  • You must have been driving more than 1 year
  • A Valid Passport
  • A Valid Credit Card (some companies will take a cash deposit until your rental is finished)

Note You can not rent a motorcycle/scooter with a 50 cc engine on a normal car driving license anymore. Previously this was permitted but recent rules have stated that you need to hold the M or AM license. Also, the licence needs to be full and not a provisional. Also, anything above this engine size requires you to hold a full motorcycle license!
