From Scotland to Norway, the introduction of motorcycle-specific road markings is being pursued as a targeted initiative aimed at shaping rider behavior and improving overall safety standards. These markings are strategically designed to guide motorcyclists through curves, intersections, and other potentially hazardous areas, with the intention of reducing accident risks and fostering safer riding practices across diverse road environments.
The Federation of European Motorcyclists’ Associations (FEMA) is emphasizing the benefits of implementing road markings specifically designed for motorcycles, citing evidence from Austria and the United Kingdom that demonstrates their effectiveness in encouraging riders to adopt safer trajectories through corners.
PRIME road markings are a fresh take on traffic signs, created to boost motorcycle safety. Made up of three pairs of shortened chevrons placed before a bend, they prompt riders to tweak their speed, positioning, and braking as they approach the curve.
- Transport Scotland developed Project PRIME, which has been praised for boosting motorcycle safety and even took home the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in 2023.
- The markings are designed to enhance rider behaviour by creating a “funnel effect,” effectively channelling their path and encouraging safer decision-making when approaching curves. This visual guidance helps riders adjust their speed and positioning in advance, reducing the likelihood of accidents and promoting a smoother more controlled navigation through bends.
- The project has achieved notable success in reducing vehicle speeds and enhancing road positioning during cornering, leading to substantial decreases in reported motorcycle injuries.
- Local authorities are currently evaluating the implementation of these specific road markings across their networks as a measure to further improve safety for motorcyclists.
