You won’t want to do this one in a hurry, this fantastic route takes you through some of the most gorgeous scenery that Finland has to offer. It twists and turns you through forests, over bridges towering above tranquil waters, and through quaint little towns and villages.

One of the best parts of this route is the section where the beautifully curvaceous road meanders lazily along the deep blue waters of Puumalan lake, there are plenty of pull-in spots along the way for you to stop off, take photos and soak in the epic scenery.

This route is approximately 70 miles long and will take you roughly two hours to ride without stopping, however, there’s no doubt you’ll be stopping off a lot to appreciate the stunning views, so you could easily turn it into a day trip, or two…


Mikkeli is a city in Finland and the regional capital of South Savo. It is located in the Finnish Lakeland.

Mikkeli is located on the shores of Lake Saimaa. Mikkeli is currently located in the South Savo region. 


When driving from Mikkeli to Puumala, the first stop is Anttola, which is a popular holiday cottage location, but also a destination for wine tourism.

Anttola is a village and a former municipality of Finland located in the modern region of Southern Savonia. Together with Mikkelin maalaiskunta, it was consolidated with the town of Mikkeli in 2001.


As the journey continues, the Lake Saimaa landscape becomes more and more visible and the roads become more winding as you approach Leitvesi.

Lietvesi is a medium-sized lake of Central Finland in the Kymijoki main catchment area. It is situated in the Konnevesi municipality. It belongs to the Konnevesi-Laukaa canoeing route.


Small rocky islands and islets are sprinkled here and there along Lake Saimaa, and it is hard to keep your eyes on the road when all you want to do is admire the views.

Saimaa  is a lake located in the Finnish Lakeland area in south eastern Finland. With a surface area of approximately 1,652 square miles (4,279 km2), it is the largest lake in Finland, and the fourth-largest natural freshwater lake in Europe.


Built in an old sawmill setting, the tourist centre offers delicious food, accommodation, a smoke sauna and a wide range of activities. A spectacular view of Lake Saimaa crowns the visit.

Puumala is a municipality of Finland. It is located in the Southern Savonia region. The municipality covers an area of 477 square miles (1,237.75 km2) of which 171 square miles (443.17 km2) is water.

Puumala is a charming municipality with harbor on of Lake Saimaa. In the past one crossed the Puumalansalmi Strait by ferry, these can still be found operating in Hinvirta andyyspohja, well as from Sulkava. However, we would not advisable to ride past Puumala, despite the handsome bridge across the strait. Instead, you should visit Puumala and spend a leisurely watching passing boat traffic try the fresh fish and other delicacies.
