Yesterday was a busy day, having to move bikes around to get one onto the ramp can be a nightmare. Anyway, Dan and myself managed to get the challenge bike onto the ramp and up in the air.
The top yoke and handlebar mount has been sand blasted and powder coated thanks to Ant and with some luck the front end now has a new (to us) flat handle bar, new levers and front brake master cylinder, and for once, even without measuring the mirrors (donated by RS Motorworx from one of their previous projects) fitted into the levers perfectly.
The electrics were checked and the indicator tell tale was not just on, no flashing, and then I realised when indicating all the indicators flashed intermittently. After a little bit of head scratching I realised that the indicators being ‘chaser’ didn’t require the flasher relay. So a rewire of the indicators was in order, minus the flasher relay and the tell tale needed to be replaced with flashing LED’s (I am not saying this is the correct way, just the way that I over come the issue), and now everything is working perfectly.
The new headlight needs brackets making for it. The ones in the kit are too short and they foul on the front brake line, clutch cable and the wiring for the handle bar. As Ant would say, its time for some CAD (cardboard aided design).
On a side note, this is why I like to go through all the electrics. Once the switch gear (original, untouched by us) was swapped over, everything worked except the starter switch, I started chasing down the look from the switchgear and found some insulation tape part way down, on of the wires has been spliced and ‘joined’ in the past to a very poor fashion, this will need looking at next time, as will sorting the starter (quite a common problem on these I am lead to believe) it may just be a case of a new wire from the switch to the solenoid, or the switch could be scrap.
Hoping to get more work done on Friday.
Dan has told me off for not having many pictures on here so I will make him get some next time were working on it.
Ten steps forward, one step back.
Nige has teamed up with 12 volt planet, Atom batteries, All Oils, Beeline navigation, Dr Wack, Goodridge, HiFlo filtro, Lomo, Lone Rider, MandP, MSG bike gear, Pinlock, Rippl impact gear, RS Motorworx, SMD automotive and Ultimate Addons to complete this challenge. Without the help of these companies this wouldn’t have been possible.
Nige would also like to extend his gratitude to Ant and Dan for their help and Emma for supporting him whilst he is spending time in the garage.
