Georgia, perched where Europe meets Asia, is a former Soviet republic known for its stunning Caucasus Mountain villages and scenic Black Sea coast. It’s famous for Vardzia, a sprawling 12th-century cave monastery, and Kakheti, its celebrated wine region with centuries-old traditions. The capital, Tbilisi, charms with its blend of architectural styles and the winding cobblestone streets of its historic old town.

Best Time for a Georgian Road Trip
Spring
Spring is a fantastic season for a road trip through Georgia, as winter fades into warmer days and the countryside bursts with wildflowers and newborn animals—at least in the lowlands! Snow will still linger on the roads leading into the Caucasus Mountains, keeping some routes closed. Late April and May are perfect for visiting the area around Kutaisi and exploring Davit Gareja, Vardzia, and Vashlovani, though the latter is best tackled in dry weather when the clay-like mud tracks are easier to navigate.
Summer
July and August are peak months in Georgia, especially in Tbilisi, Kutaisi, and Batumi. During this time, flights, accommodations, and car rentals tend to be pricier, and attractions more crowded. But with sunny skies, the roads to the Higher Caucasus open up, making Tusheti and Mestia top spots as the last snow melts and routes become accessible again. Summer is also perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, paragliding, quad biking, and rafting.
Autumn
Autumn is a beautiful season in Georgia, with vibrant fall colors to enjoy while the warmth of summer lingers into early October. It’s also the perfect time to visit Kakheti, when the grape harvest is in full swing and you can discover how traditional Georgian wine is made.
Winter
In winter, much of Georgia experiences snow and rain, which can damage roads. Landslides, rockfalls, and crumbling surfaces are fairly common, even in the low plains and steppe, and some roads may close entirely. Still, the scenery is breath taking, and in the lowlands, you can enjoy all the attractions—just make sure to wrap up!
