At this year’s China International Import Expo (CIIE), Honda quietly pulled off something pretty interesting by unveiling the Honda CBR500R Four, an inline four-cylinder sport bike. Making its public debut alongside several other new Honda models, the real star is the engine—a newly developed 502cc inline-four, a setup Honda hasn’t offered in this class for ages. In a market now ruled by parallel twins, it’s a clear throwback to Honda’s multi-cylinder legacy.

The CBR500R Four adheres closely to the well-established CBR formula, featuring full fairing, sporty yet practical proportions, and styling that emphasizes “everyday performance” rather than an overtly track-focused aesthetic. Honda characterizes it as having a “technological feel,” which in practice translates to the inclusion of modern rider aids over attention-grabbing power outputs. While official specifications are scarce, reports indicate that its 502cc engine delivers just under 80 bhp, presumably at a high engine speed.
One confirmed feature for the bike is Honda’s E-Clutch system. This innovative technology enables automatic clutch operation at low speeds, during initial take-off, and in stop-and-go traffic, while still providing the option for the rider to operate the clutch lever manually if desired. The system’s behaviour can be adjusted through various riding modes, ensuring smoother starts and reduced rider workload, all without pushing the motorcycle into the realm of fully automatic, scooter-like operation.
Additionally, the CBR500R Four is equipped with a 5-inch TFT display featuring a Chinese-language interface and Honda RoadSync connectivity, enabling seamless integration of navigation, calls, and media controls directly into the dashboard. This combination reflects a contemporary and distinctly Honda design ethos, targeting younger riders and urban commuters seeking a motorcycle that integrates effortlessly with their smartphones.
It remains uncertain whether this four-cylinder 500 will be offered beyond the Chinese market. Inquiries to Honda UK and Honda Motor Europe elicited the response, “We have nothing to announce regarding future model plans.” Nevertheless, its very existence indicates that Honda may be gauging interest and exploring potential opportunities, which in itself is noteworthy.
Alongside the CBR, Honda unveiled the CB500 Super Four, equipped with the same 502cc inline-four engine and electronic package. Featuring an un-faired, more traditional design, it mirrors the styling of the recently introduced CB1000F, drawing extensively on the CB lineage and its storied four-cylinder heritage.
