Honest review of the Interceptor 650

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is the perfect mix of timeless style and modern performance.

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 stands as one of the most celebrated motorcycles in its category, revered for its ability to revive the golden age of classic motorcycling while seamlessly integrating modern engineering advancements. Introduced as a key model in Royal Enfield’s 650 twin series, it has played a pivotal role in reshaping and elevating the brand’s global identity, earning widespread acclaim among enthusiasts and critics alike.

Design and Build Quality.

The Interceptor 650 showcases a classic design influenced by the 1960s British roadsters, featuring a distinctive round headlamp, a teardrop-shaped fuel tank with knee recesses, and a twin-pod analog instrument cluster that exudes genuine vintage charm. Its build quality is exemplary, with robust metal construction and meticulous fit and finish. The ergonomically upright and relaxed riding posture enhances comfort, making it equally adept for navigating urban streets and undertaking extended highway rides.

Engine and Performance

The Interceptor is powered by a 648cc parallel-twin, air-oil-cooled engine that delivers 47 bhp and 52 Nm of torque. Its exceptionally smooth operation, combined with refined and linear power delivery, makes it ideal for relaxed cruising. A 6-speed gearbox equipped with a slip-assist clutch ensures seamless gear changes. Whether navigating city traffic or cruising on open roads, the Interceptor remains stable, torquey, and impressively quick. The double-cradle frame, developed in collaboration with Harris Performance, offers excellent balance and inspires cornering confidence, while the suspension system—featuring telescopic forks at the front and twin gas-charged shocks at the rear—effectively absorbs road imperfections. Despite its 202 kg weight, the motorcycle handles with agility once underway, aided by Pirelli Phantom tyres that provide outstanding grip and stability. Comfort is enhanced by an upright riding position, wide handlebars, and a well-padded seat, though the 804 mm seat height may pose a challenge for shorter riders. The twin exhaust pipes produce a deep, satisfying note, further enriching the riding experience. With a fuel efficiency of approximately 60mpg, the Interceptor prioritizes performance and enjoyment over economy, while its 13.7-litre fuel tank offers a reasonable touring range. Regular maintenance is required, consistent with expectations for a twin-cylinder motorcycle.

Down to the final thoughts

While I appreciate the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 for its impressive performance and capabilities, I would not say I am enamored with it. It is undeniably a remarkable motorcycle; I have ridden it with a passenger and taken it on tours.

The only issues encountered were a petrol leak upon the first refuelling, which was promptly resolved by the dealer within an hour, and, a couple of weeks later, a brief misfire while traveling on the M6—an incident I firmly believe was ECU-controlled and has not recurred since.

While it may not be exceptionally fast, it offers sufficient speed for most purposes. Motorway travel is comfortable, and it delivers commendable handling for a classically styled motorcycle. Although it cannot match the performance of high-powered 1000cc superbikes, that is not the essence of the Interceptor; its appeal lies in its balance of style, comfort, and capability rather than outright speed.

It is unlikely that a more exceptional classic-style motorcycle can be found within this price range, offering such a remarkable balance of design, performance, and value. And lets be honest, it just looks so damn cool!
