Being a GoPro lover for at least ten years, it was quite a hard pill to swallow to get a Insta360. GoPro have brought out the MAX (which I am hoping to review before the end of the summer) which like the Insta360 X3 is a 360 degrees camera.
I decided on the X3 mainly for the cost comparison. GoPro have the MAX which is priced around £250, so the Insta360 X3 is the closest price for comparison.

- 360 Capture & Reframing: X3 captures 5.7K 360 Active HDR video, so you’ll never miss the action. Choose your favorite angle after the fact with easy reframing tools in the AI-powered Insta360 app.
- Dual 1/2″ 48MP Sensors: X3’s new sensors pack in more pixels for greater clarity and detail, even in low light. Capture 72MP photos, 8K timelapses and more.
- 4K Single-Lens Mode: Select a lens to shoot wide-angle footage just like a single-lens action cam. Get maximum resolution with 4K30fps or an extremely wide 170° field of view with 2.7K MaxView. Your first-person view footage has never looked so good.
- FlowState Stabilization & 360 Horizon Lock: FlowState Stabilization and horizon leveling algorithms come together to deliver incredibly smooth videos.
The Insta X3 has been around for a few years now, they have the X4 and the X5 also. This is the lowest 360 camera that Insta360 make now.
And for me, its amazing!
Yes the Insta360 X4 and X5 has improvements in the video resolution and the sensor size, but with two 72MP images (with the dual 48MP sensors) sensors compared to the GoPro hero 13 with 12MP images, I don’t see the need to go for anything other than the X3.
On a full charge it has been reported that you can get just over a hour recording on 60fps. You can swap the battery and have a spare, but you are unable charge and record at the same time.

The camera comes with a multitude of different mounts, however I had an UltimateAddons camera mount already fitted on the bike which was used for the previous camera tests, so this will be the testbed to keep it fair.
I also used the ‘invisible selfie stick’ for the 360 videos to follow.
The camera its self is well constructed, it feels strong and like it will take a drop or two, the same can be said for the motorbike mounting kit!
The Insta360 app is not as easy to understand and use as the GoPro Quik. The app will also edit a video for you using AI.
I have not subscribed to the app, there are not as many benefits as there are subscribing to the GoPro Quik.

- Active HDR Mode:
- This innovative feature enhances video quality in challenging lighting situations, revealing details in both highlights and shadows that other cameras might miss.

- The X3 employs advanced stabilization technology to ensure smooth footage, even during dynamic activities.
- 360° Horizon Lock feature keeps your videos level, regardless of camera orientation.

- The camera supports various modes, including time-lapse, hyper-lapse, and loop recording, making it suitable for a wide range of shooting scenarios.

- With a pocket-friendly size and a rugged build, the X3 is designed for outdoor adventures. It is also waterproof, making it suitable for various environments.
- Invisible Selfie Stick:
- The camera can be used with an invisible selfie stick, allowing for unique third-person perspectives without the stick appearing in the shot.
- AI-Powered Editing:
- The Insta360 app provides intuitive editing tools, enabling users to reframe their shots and share content seamlessly on social media.
Final thoughts:
Depending on your budget, this is a great camera. I didn’t feel the need or want for a screen to show where the camera was pointing, the GoPro app gives you a preview, which I think is great.
After speaking to some other people about this camera, there are some motocross teams that have a few, like me they love the rear mount.
Overall for the money, I really doubt you will get better quality. My only complaint would be the battery life of about a hour and a half.
