Royal Enfield, established in 1901, is the oldest motorcycle manufacturer in continuous production, known for its classic designs and robust motorcycles.
Early beginnings.
Royal Enfield’s origins trace back to 1891 when Bob Walker Smith and Albert Eadie purchased George Townsend & Co., a needle manufacturing company in Redditch, Worcestershire, England. They began producing bicycles and later renamed their bicycles “Royal Enfields” after winning a contract to supply precision parts to the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, Middlesex. The trademark “Made Like A Gun” was introduced, emphasizing the company’s connection to quality and craftsmanship.
First motorcycle production.
The first Royal Enfield motorcycle was produced in 1901, featuring a 1.5 horsepower engine. This marked the company’s entry into the motorcycle market, and they quickly gained recognition for their innovative designs. By 1909, Royal Enfield had introduced its first V-Twin motorcycle, which achieved significant success in various competitions.
World War contributions.

During World War I, Royal Enfield supplied motorcycles to the British and allied forces, further solidifying its reputation for reliability and performance. The company continued to innovate, introducing models like the 350cc overhead valve four-stroke motorcycle with a foot-operated gear change in the post-war period.
Expansion and Indian operations.
In 1955, Royal Enfield partnered with Madras Motors in India to assemble the Royal Enfield Bullet under license. By 1962, all components were manufactured in India, and the Bullet became a staple motorcycle in the Indian market. The Bullet model is notable for being the oldest motorcycle in continuous production, with its design remaining largely unchanged.
Modern era.
Today, Royal Enfield is a subsidiary of Eicher Motors and continues to produce a range of classic and modern motorcycles, including the Classic 350, Interceptor 650, and Himalayan. The brand has successfully blended its rich heritage with contemporary design and technology, appealing to a global audience of motorcycle enthusiasts.

Royal Enfield’s history reflects a commitment to quality, innovation, and a deep connection to its roots, making it a significant player in the motorcycle industry for over a century.
