This has to be one of the most thrilling motorcycling routes in the world!
Welcome to the legendary Route 40 – a trip that will have you soaking in stunning Andean landscapes and the beauty of the Lakes District. Beginning in the town of La Quiaca on the Bolivian border, this route stretches nearly to the southern tip of the South American continent.Alternatively, you could start from the south and work your way north, tackling the rough sections of the road first.
I won’t try to capture the beauty of the road, as it’s simply too much to take in at once. Towering snowy peaks, rushing rivers, and stunning turquoise lakes will keep you endlessly captivated.
Just when your fingers are numb from snapping endless photos, you’ll find yourself stepping into the breathtaking Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site!
Keep in mind, this is one of the longest roads in the world and demands serious riding skills. You’ll be crossing mountain passes over 4,000 meters (that’s some serious altitude) and facing Patagonian crosswinds that will have you crouching low. The roads will also be rugged, with plenty of compact dirt and gravel surfaces.
The ideal time for this ride is in late spring or early summer, when the roads are free of snow. In Argentina, that means from October to December. Since some stretches of the road are sparsely populated, bringing an extra can of fuel is a smart move.
