How to choose the best motorcycle security.

Data shows that using a disc lock reduces the chance of a thief stealing your bike by a factor of three, while a quality chain and lock will make it less likely to be stolen than a car. As with any crime, be aware of it, take some simple steps (in the same was you lock your house when you go out), then try to stop worrying.
Just using any lock, even a cheap one, will significantly reduce the chances of your bike being stolen. Despite what social media would have you believe, while any crime is a problem, the main thing you should be doing is enjoying your motorcycle or scooter.

But what are the options?
Disc lock.
All of my bikes have a disc lock, some are expensive some are cheaper. They work well and small to store and carry.
Prices start from around £10.00

Relying on somewhere to chain the bike to, perfect if the bike is in a garage. However bulky to travel or tour with.
Prices start from around £25.00

U lock.
Something that I have only really started to use recently. A U lock is stronger than a disc lock and take us less space than a chain.
Prices start from around £40.00

Tracker.
All of my bikes have a tracker, for me just a quick look on the app gives you a sense of security. You can get expensive ones or you can buy cheaper ‘air tag’ types.
Prices start from around £8.00

Keeping your bike covered and away from prying eyes reduced the temptation from opportunistic thief’s.
Prices start from around £15.00

Key Prevention Strategies.
To prevent motorbike theft, use multiple security measures, stay aware of your surroundings, and park in well-lit, busy areas.
- Use Quality Locks and Chains: Invest in high-quality locks, such as a U-lock or chain lock, to secure your motorcycle to an immovable object. A disc lock can also be effective in preventing the bike from being moved.
- Layer Your Security: Employ multiple security devices to make your bike less attractive to thieves. For example, use a ground anchor fixed to the floor or wall, which allows you to secure your bike with a chain and lock.
- Always Use the Steering Lock: Engage the steering lock and remove the ignition keys whenever you leave your bike, even for a short time. This simple step can deter opportunistic thieves.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings: When parking, choose well-lit areas with high foot traffic. Avoid secluded spots where thieves can work unnoticed. Look for locations with CCTV coverage, such as near banks or busy shops.
- Cover Your Motorcycle: Using a cover can make your bike less appealing to thieves and adds an extra layer of security by obscuring its make and model.
- Install an Alarm System: Consider adding a motorcycle alarm that will alert you and others if someone attempts to tamper with your bike. This can act as a strong deterrent.
- Secure Parking: If possible, park your motorcycle in a garage or behind a locked gate. If you must park outside, look for motorcycle-friendly parking lots with secure fixtures like steel posts or hoops.
- Stay Vigilant: Be aware of suspicious individuals or vehicles in your vicinity. Thieves often look for easy targets, so maintaining awareness can help prevent theft.
- Record Your Bike’s Information: Keep a record of your motorcycle’s make, model, and VIN. Engraving your VIN onto the frame can also help in recovery if your bike is stolen.
- Keep your bike covered when outside overnight.
By implementing these strategies, you can significantly reduce the risk of your motorcycle being stolen and enhance your overall security. Remember, the more layers of security you have, the harder it becomes for thieves to succeed.
